What does the surgery entail?

The type of incision placed to correct sagging breasts will vary, depending on the individual, and whether implants will be placed. If implants are a part of the procedure, they are placed under the pectoralis muscle.

This placement technique provides additional support and helps to keep the breasts in a higher position for longer.

What incisions are used in a breast lift?

The degree of lift will determine how many incisions are needed and where they will be placed. Once the incisions are made, excess skin is removed, the nipple structure repositioned to create the most ideal, youthful look.

The sutures are placed deep in the breast wall to secure and hold the breast up firmly. There are several incision placements to consider:

Around the the areola (the tissue immediately surrounding the nipple)
Vertically from the bottom of the areola to the crease under the breast
Horizontally beneath the breast following the natural crease
A combination of incisions

What to expect?

Breast lift surgery at the Austin Plastic Surgery Institute is performed under general anesthesia and is an outpatient procedure in most cases. The time to perform this custom surgery varies, typically requiring one to two hours. The recovery from a breast lift will vary, based on your natural healing, and whether it was performed as a stand-alone surgery or as part of a more comprehensive mommy makeover. You should feel ready to return to your usual activities within a few days. Exercise will be a gradual process. Most women can go back to their exercise routines in four to six weeks, whether yoga, running, weight training, or other exercise programs.

Do I need a breast lift, or implants, or both?

Breast augmentation surgery with implants will help with size, but it will not help women if their breasts sag or droop downward past a certain point. Some doctors may advise you to use implants to address sagging. This may achieve immediate results, but the additional weight causes the breasts to sag further. A breast lift is the only procedure that will lift the breasts to a youthful position on the chest. Implants may or may not be needed – many women like their natural size, and just want to restore the round, lifted, perky look of youth.

In some cases, a combination breast lift and augmentation will approach. This procedure, called a breast augmentation with lift, achieves a reduction in sag and an increase in volume and projection. When no size increase is needed, a breast lift without implants is typically best.

During your consultation, we will discuss whether a breast lift, breast augmentation, or a breast lift and implants will attain the best results.

Can my nipples be moved?

During a breast lift procedure, the nipple and areola will be placed in a location on the breast that is natural and proportionate. The goal during this surgery is to reduce the size of the areola (the area surrounding the nipple) so it looks balanced with the new breast size and shape.

Will I have scars?

There is no way to avoid making the necessary incisions for a breast lift, but these incision lines will not be visible, even in a plunging bra or bikini top. With time, the scars fade, and our clients are so happy with the stunning new look that they feel the hidden scars are a minor tradeoff.

Do I need breast reduction with a lift?

Breast reduction surgery may also be combined with a breast lift in Austin to lift the breasts, while reducing breast size.
