Benefits of a Breast Lift

A breast lift can dramatically improve the shape and position of the breasts, helping women feel more confident and comfortable with their bodies.

Benefits of breast lift surgery may include:

  • Restoring a youthful breast shape and contour
  • Raising the position of sagging breasts
  • Repositioning downward-facing nipples
  • Improving breast symmetry
  • Reducing stretched or enlarged areolas
  • Creating firmer, more proportionate breasts
  • Helping clothing and swimsuits fit more comfortably

For women who want to restore lost breast volume as well as lift, a breast lift can be combined with breast implants for enhanced fullness and projection.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Over time, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, aging, and genetics can cause the breasts to lose firmness and begin to sag.

You may be a good candidate for a breast lift in Austin if you:

  • Have breasts that appear droopy or sagging
  • Notice your nipples point downward or sit below the breast crease
  • Have stretched skin or enlarged areolas
  • Feel your breasts have lost their shape or firmness after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Want to restore youthful breast contour without significantly increasing size

Ideal candidates should also be in good overall health, maintain a stable weight, and have realistic expectations about surgical outcomes.

During your consultation, our board-certified surgeons will evaluate your breast shape, skin quality, and goals to determine whether a breast lift alone or a breast lift combined with breast implants will provide the best result.

What does the surgery entail?

The type of incision placed to correct sagging breasts will vary, depending on the individual, and whether implants will be placed. If implants are a part of the procedure, they are placed under the pectoralis muscle.

This placement technique provides additional support and helps to keep the breasts in a higher position for longer.

If a breast lift with larger implants meets your vision for your body, a supportive tissue matrix may be used to secure the implants and maintain the beauty of the enhanced, lifted breasts.

What incisions are used in a breast lift?

The degree of lift will determine how many incisions are needed and where they will be placed. Once the incisions are made, excess skin is removed, the nipple structure repositioned to create the most ideal, youthful look.

The sutures are placed deep in the breast wall to secure and hold the breast up firmly. There are several incision placements to consider:

  • Around the the areola (the tissue immediately surrounding the nipple)
  • Vertically from the bottom of the areola to the crease under the breast
  • Horizontally beneath the breast following the natural crease
  • A combination of incisions

Breast Lift Recovery Timeline

Recovery from breast lift surgery varies from patient to patient, but most women are pleasantly surprised by how manageable the healing process is.

Swelling, tightness, and mild soreness are common during the first few days. You will wear a surgical bra to support the breasts as they heal. Most patients can return to light daily activities within several days.

Weeks Two to Three

Bruising and swelling begin to improve. Many patients feel comfortable returning to work if their job is not physically demanding.

Weeks Four to Six

Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should still be avoided during early recovery, but most patients are able to gradually return to normal workouts around this time.

Three to Six Months

Swelling continues to resolve, and the breasts settle into their final shape and position. Incision lines will continue to fade over time.

Breast lift FAQ

Do I need a breast lift, or implants, or both?

Breast augmentation surgery with implants will help with size, but it will not help women if their breasts sag or droop downward past a certain point. Some doctors may advise you to use implants to address sagging. This may achieve immediate results, but the additional weight causes the breasts to sag further. A breast lift is the only procedure that will lift the breasts to a youthful position on the chest. Implants may or may not be needed – many women like their natural size, and just want to restore the round, lifted, perky look of youth.

In some cases, a combination breast lift and augmentation will approach. This procedure, called a breast augmentation with lift, achieves a reduction in sag and an increase in volume and projection. When no size increase is needed, a breast lift without implants is typically best.

During your consultation, we will discuss whether a breast lift, breast augmentation, or a breast lift and implants will attain the best results.

Can my nipples be moved?

During a breast lift procedure, the nipple and areola will be placed in a location on the breast that is natural and proportionate. The goal during this surgery is to reduce the size of the areola (the area surrounding the nipple) so it looks balanced with the new breast size and shape.

Will I have scars?

There is no way to avoid making the necessary incisions for a breast lift, but these incision lines will not be visible, even in a plunging bra or bikini top. With time, the scars fade, and our clients are so happy with the stunning new look that they feel the hidden scars are a minor tradeoff.

Do I need breast reduction with a lift?

Breast reduction surgery may also be combined with a breast lift in Austin to lift the breasts, while reducing breast size. A combination breast reduction and lift with the added need to remove excess fat and breast tissue, along with sagging skin. More information on this procedure can be found on the breast reduction page.

Can a breast lift correct asymmetry?

Yes. A breast lift can improve breast symmetry by reshaping and repositioning breast tissue. During mastopexy, the surgeon can adjust the height, contour, and nipple position of each breast individually to create a more balanced appearance.

Will a breast lift make my breasts smaller?

A breast lift primarily reshapes and lifts the breast rather than significantly reducing size. Some women notice their breasts appear slightly smaller because excess skin is removed. If you want to increase volume, a breast lift can be combined with breast implants.

Can a breast lift be combined with other procedures?

Yes. Many patients combine a breast lift with other procedures, especially as part of a mommy makeover. Common combinations include breast augmentation, tummy tuck surgery, and liposuction to help restore body contours after pregnancy or weight loss.

How long do breast lift results last?

Breast lift results are long lasting, but natural aging, gravity, pregnancy, and weight changes can affect the breasts over time. Maintaining a stable weight and wearing supportive bras can help preserve results for many years.

Can I breastfeed after a breast lift?

Many women are still able to breastfeed after a breast lift, although it cannot be guaranteed. The procedure typically preserves the connection between the nipple and underlying breast tissue, but future breastfeeding ability varies from patient to patient.

How painful is breast lift recovery?

Most patients report mild to moderate discomfort after breast lift surgery. Pain is usually well controlled with medication and improves within the first few days. Many patients return to light daily activities within about a week.
