The doctors of the Austin Plastic Surgery Institute believe strongly in giving back to the community of Austin, TX. All of our surgeons donate their time to work on issues of patient advocacy or to provide free medical care to people with unfortunate health or socio-economic conditions. Below is a list of the non-profit organizations where they regularly donate their time and services. Austin Breast Cancer Resource Center
The Breast Cancer Resource Center of Austin is a non-profit organization created by breast cancer survivors. The Center exists to aid women with breast cancer as well as their families and support systems. They also strive to comfort and inform women who have questions about screening and biopsy, and others in the community who are concerned about breast cancer issues. Austin Smiles
Austin Smiles is an organization that provides plastic surgery, primarily cleft lip and palate repairs, for children of Austin, Texas and the 10 surrounding county areas, as well as in various locations in Latin America. A cleft lip is an opening in the lip, while a cleft palate is an opening in the roof of the mouth. The corrective surgery provided by Austin Smiles doctors allows restoration of close to normal speech, eating, hearing and enhancement of the breathing ability to a child. The family's ability to pay does not influence the quality or availability of care received from the Austin Smiles surgeons. The Central Texas Cleft Lip and Palate Team have been committed to providing quality cleft care to all families in Central Texas for thirty years and running. The Ministry of Challenge
The Ministry of Challenge (MOC) is a faith based organization committed to aiding people with substance abuse problems in the Austin community. It also provides services for gang intervention to individuals and families, and homeless services to those living on the street in need of support and direction. MOC is a residential drug-treatment ministry rooted in Christian principles that helps guide people through a modified 12-Step Program. MOC receives patients both through referral and evangelistic efforts on the streets throughout the Austin, TX area. Once admitted into the program individuals spend at least six months as residents and participate in program ministries that include concentrated Bible study and vocational training. The residential facility can house up to 35 men at one time and since its inception over ten years ago MOC has successfully renewed the lives of more than 3,000 individuals. The Austin Women's Shelter and Safe Place are places for victims of all types of abuse--physical, sexual, emotional--to find support and escape their abusers. Through safety, healing, prevention, and social change, Safe Place is striving to end violence against women everywhere. Safe Place also holds weekly group therapy sessions for girls at their high school. This program teaches young women how to overcome fear, stand up for themselves, and not to be afraid to speak up. The Travis County Medical Society's goals include maintaining high standards of medical practice and ethical conduct, advocating the unity of physicians around the community, and providing representation for patients and physicians at all levels of government and medicine. Project Access is a system coordinated by the Society for volunteer physician care, hospital care, diagnostic services and prescription assistance for the uninsured of Travis County. When a local family with twin girls, one of which had down syndrome, found that Austin did not have any preschool programs that provided full time educational and therapeutic services to infants, toddlers and preschool aged children with developmental disabilities, they searched the country for the best available help. After visiting Rise Schools in Alabama and Houston, they decided to open one here in Austin, Texas. With a team of highly motivated volunteers and the support of Mack and Sally Brown, they created a place to aid families with children who have down syndrome and promote local awareness.
